For over 40 years, as the local Seattle affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, we have worked to meet unmet mental health needs within our community through support, referral, education and outreach.

NAMI Seattle seeks an engaging and personable Volunteer & Resource Coordinator to serve as the point of contact for volunteers as they grow in their role as mental health leaders and advocates. Our peer-led, volunteer-run programs are the heart of our organization, and we are excited to find the right person to fill this position. The Coordinator will also help to fill the gaps in our local mental health system by overseeing our Helpline and mental health resource database. This position reports to the Program Manager and is a full-time, exempt, salaried role averaging 32-35 hours per week (Monday-Thursday), including paid sick and vacation, paid holidays, health benefits, Fridays off, and teleworking options. Additionally, we are committed to the professional growth of all of our team members and offer a modest budget for professional development each year.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Coordination

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for current volunteers and volunteer applicants, maintaining an open line of communication and timely responses as needs arise.
  • Oversee a full-spectrum volunteer engagement program including recruitment, orientations, development, appreciation and follow-up.
  • Deepen and strengthen NAMI Seattle’s relationships with our volunteers.

Helpline & Resource Management

  • Listen with empathy and compassion, work with Helpline callers to distill the essential problems, and provide referrals to NAMI programs or outside resources.
  • Coordinate and manage Helpline volunteers.
  • Maintain familiarity with mental health resources in the greater Seattle area, conduct research and outreach to increase your knowledge of resources and systems, and keep resource database updated and accurate.

Requirements

  • Excellent relationship-building skills and the ability to interact warmly and genuinely with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Computer proficiency (especially with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Slack and Zoom) and the ability to navigate resource databases.
  • Available for occasional evening commitments (maximum 1-2 times per month) and weekend commitments (maximum once per month).
  • Strong written and verbal skills in English.
  • Ability to commute to our northwest Seattle office (802 NW 70th St) at least one workday per week, and reliable internet and phone connection for teleworking.

(Note: NAMI Seattle closely follows and abides by all King County public health recommendations regarding COVID precautions and safety. Currently all staff are teleworking for all or most of their schedules, and we will continue to monitor health pronouncements and recommendations as the pandemic continues. The Volunteer & Resource Coordinator will have the option to continue working a partially remote schedule even after all in-person work schedules resume, at the discretion of their manager and the Executive Director.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency or proficiency in a non-English language, especially Spanish.
  • Minimum one year experience (paid or volunteer) in a nonprofit setting.

What to expect

Applicants will receive an email confirming receipt of their materials. Candidates moving forward in the interview process will be contacted by email regarding a phone screening, followed by virtual interviews (via Zoom) in late October/early November. The final candidates will be asked to attend a short virtual interview to meet our full staff. We expect these final interviews to take place by mid-November. Our target start date for the Volunteer & Resource Coordinator is December 1st. This position will remain open until filled.
