Our mission includes helping individuals and businesses in the Asian American community, find the right lawyer to meet their legal needs. The Asian American Bar Association of New York is one of the largest bar associations in the United States dedicated primarily to promoting diversity in the legal profession. We are seeking a full or part-time multi-lingual coordinator for this opportunity who can work remotely in a private and professional setting to respond to requests for legal information and assistance from attorneys and members of the public, especially from the Asian American community.
Essential Areas of Responsibility include, but are not limited to:
- Respond to calls, emails and letters from the general public.
- Triage legal issues and direct clients to participating lawyers and other legal resources.
- Provide basic legal information to the public.
- Use entry and retrieval database program to make attorney referrals.
- Handle other duties, including research, public relations, marketing and public outreach, as assigned.
- Provide fluent communication in written and spoken English and at least one of the following is essential: Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese), Japanese, Korean.
- Exercise excellent customer service, phone manner and written/verbal communication skills while maintaining confidential and sensitive telephone interviews with members of the public needing the assistance of a lawyer or direction to a community resource in New York.
- Handle referral requests from members of the public requesting assistance via email, in writing and occasionally in person.
- Screen modest means and pro bono applications for client eligibility based on income and case type.
- Possess intermediate computer skills. Experience with database programs and Microsoft Office Suite or Google Apps preferred.
- Experience with the justice system and with social service networks serving New York preferred.
- Experience managing challenging people preferred.
- Paralegal training preferred.
