Finance Operations Senior Associate


ioby seeks a Finance Operations Senior Associate to join our team. This role reports to the CFO, and is primarily a backend function that the Leader Team relies on for speedy responses to all financial, legal and operational issues related to the projects funded on ioby.

The Finance Operations Senior Associate will play a critical new role on our team. Reporting to the Chief Finance Officer, this team member will play a critical role in getting timely funding into the hands of community leaders. Responsibilities will include managing all project disbursements, (60%); all project fund reconciliations and audit preparation (20%); and troubleshooting special donation transaction issues (20%).

For the right candidate, this position is an exciting opportunity to shape the growth of a mission-driven nonprofit while contributing to a growing movement of resident-led positive change with rapidly increased demands since the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic.

This job may require occasional work outside of ioby’s regular business hours (9am–6pm Eastern; Monday through Friday).

ioby (In Our Backyards), founded in 2008, is a civic tech nonprofit that mobilizes neighbors who have good ideas to become powerful civic leaders who plan, fund, and make positive change in their own neighborhoods. ioby was recognized by the Obama Foundation for contributions to civic innovation, was awarded the Jane Jacobs Medal by the Rockefeller Foundation, and an American Civic Collaboration Award for increasing civic participation.

The primary activities of this role are to be responsive to the Leader Team by:

  • Managing all disbursements to ioby Leaders, reconciliation of all project donations and disbursements
  • Managing all legal and grant agreements with ioby Leaders
  • Supporting our audits with all project donation, disbursement, reconciliations and expenditure reports
  • Processing and recording all manual donations
  • Troubleshooting any donor transaction issues or questions


Candidates for this position must have the following characteristics:

  • Responsive in communication, quick to action
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Experience working with a diverse group of people online including people who may not be very comfortable using online tools and those with a lot of comfort using online tools
  • Experience with accounting or bookkeeping
  • Ability to perform account reconciliations
  • Excellent at math and excel
  • Attentive to detail
  • Experience managing up
  • Experience using a variety of software programs, including at least one CRM and one CMS
  • At least 5 years experience using excel
  • Flexible, high performing despite interruptions or changes
  • Excellent in time management
  • Comfort working on a distributed team
  • Demonstrated use of good judgment
  • Demonstrated experience using discretion in past roles
  • Responsible
  • Excellent customer service approach
  • Comfort working in an environment with lots of change and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Desire to work at a multiracial organization in the midst of a long-term process of creating a Racial Equity and Inclusion Framework

Extraordinary candidates for this job will have the following nice to have characteristics:

This is a full-time, salaried position. We are actively seeking candidates to work in some of ioby’s priority places -- Memphis, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati -- where the salary range is $36,000 - $48,000. In New York or San Francisco the salary range is $50,000–$65,000. For candidates in other areas, the salary is adjusted for cost of living. Please note that this position must accommodate east coast hours regardless of location.

The position includes a generous benefit package (including full coverage for health, vision, and dental, 27 vacation days, 10 sick days, 7 holidays, and an attractive "Whole Person" policy).
