From the California Climate Action Corps, the country’s first statewide climate corps program, to the #CaliforniansForAll service initiative launched in response to COVID-19 to establish a volunteer corps to support the state’s response to emergencies and disasters, California Volunteers plays an integral role in tackling the state’s problems.

Led by the state’s Chief Service Officer, Josh Fryday, California Volunteers is supported by a bipartisan 25-member Commission and a team of experts driven by a mission to empower and mobilize all Californians to volunteer and serve in their communities.

Position Description:

As California Volunteers continues to develop and launch exciting and innovative volunteer programs and strategies to meet emerging needs, the Volunteer Director will serve at the forefront of these efforts. The Volunteer Director is tasked with building and leading the state infrastructure for volunteerism, working closely with public and private partners to engage Californians in volunteerism in support of the Governor’s volunteer strategy and priorities. Leading the #CaliforniansForAll volunteer initiative, the Volunteer Director will manage volunteer efforts to support disaster response and recovery, as well as overseeing the development of new volunteer projects to support critical community needs and statewide priorities. The Volunteer Director will work under the leadership of the Chief Program Officer, working closely with the entire Program team to enhance and magnify the service and volunteerism collective impact model. 


50%   Development and Operationalization of Volunteerism Strategies and Programming

·        Develop a statewide and regional strategy for volunteer coordination, before, during, and after disasters.

·        Provide management of staff focused on volunteer coordination and project operationalization.

·        Work with the Website Developer and the Digital Infrastructure Officer to ensure proper maintenance and management of the volunteer platform/database infrastructure. Additionally, working with Data Manager in making sure data/metrics collected is accurate for reporting.

·        Lead the development of programming to support the professionalization of volunteer coordinators, including maintenance of volunteer management training; participation in statewide and national partnerships related to volunteer management; and exploration of related new initiatives.

·        Strengthen the connection of nonprofits to available State, Federal, and private volunteerism resources.

·        Manage any state or federal grants associated with volunteerism including, but not limited to, the Volunteer Generation Fund, Days of Service, etc.

·        Maintain primary relationships and collaborate with national and state-level volunteer organizations, such as Points of Light Institute/HandsOn Network, VolunteerMatch, Volunteer Centers of California, and others.

·        Maintain a working knowledge of best practices in the volunteer/service field, with a particular focus on disaster volunteerism.

30%   New Initiative Development

·        Collaborate with the Communications Department staff as well as the Executive Staff to develop volunteer activities and initiatives.

·        Conduct research in the development of new initiatives aimed to increase volunteerism, including similar work of other state commissions, other state agencies, and innovative nonprofits.

15%   Volunteer Outreach & Recognition

·        Support the development and implementation of a business volunteering strategy.

·        Conduct outreach to other State agencies to explore partnership opportunities.

·        Collaborate with the Program team, the Communications Department, and the California Volunteers’ Executive team to plan and manage the execution of special events that promote the impact of service and volunteering in local communities (e.g. the Governor’s Volunteering and Service Awards).

5%     Other Duties as Assigned

·        Provide support and assistance on other duties pertaining to volunteerism, service strategies, etc. as they arise.


-      Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of experience in the volunteer management field.

-      Five years managerial experience.

-      Strong written and oral communications skills.

-      Ability to manage multiple projects at one time, particularly those that are high-profile and time-sensitive.

-      Excellent working knowledge of the volunteer field, best practices, and key partners.

-      Experience developing and maintaining complex partnerships.

-      Strong computer skills.

-      Ability to travel occasionally and work an irregular and sometimes demanding schedule.


This position's location is not limited to Sacramento, California. California Volunteers' office is located in Sacramento. However, California Volunteers will accommodate applicants who wish to work remotely temporarily as a result of COVID-19, or permanently. Therefore, California Volunteers will consider applicants throughout the state who are interested in this position.
