California Volunteers, Office of the Governor is the state office tasked with engaging Californians in service, volunteering and civic action to tackle our state’s most pressing challenges while lifting up all communities.
From the California Climate Action Corps, the country’s first statewide climate corps program, to the #CaliforniansForAll service initiative launched in response to COVID-19 to establish a volunteer corps to support the state’s response to emergencies and disasters, California Volunteers plays an integral role in tackling the state’s problems.
Led by the state’s Chief Service Officer, Josh Fryday, California Volunteers is supported by a bipartisan 25-member Commission and a team of experts driven by a mission to empower and mobilize all Californians to volunteer and serve in their communities.
Under the administrative direction of the Digital Infrastructure Officer, the Web Developer/Digital Web Specialist maintains and updates the California Volunteers, Office of the Governor website. The Web Developer/Digital Web Specialist is responsible for system development and support of the information technology projects, adhering to all state website policies and guidelines and works in collaboration with the Communications Department on messaging and content for the website.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
A. Specific Activities: Essential (E) / Marginal (M) Functions
Quickly develops new landing pages adhere to all state website policies and guidelines. Maintains content on Department website using Content Management Systems (CMS). Reviews, edits, and publishes content to external website. Posts content to blog using WordPress.
Establishes Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), monitors product performance using Google Analytics, and drafts proposals to optimize and/or delete low performing assets. Makes written and verbal recommendations on content placement and usage, information architecture modifications, and website enhancements based on metrics and user feedback. Proposes new links, content, or Search Hints based on search term analysis.
Reviews and edits digital content to ensure compliance with Department style and brand guidelines, federal plain language guidelines, and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1). Assists with remediation of documents.

The Web Developer/Digital Web Specialist, reports directly and receives the majority of assignments from the Digital Infrastructure Officer.

The incumbent works with executive staff members as well as the Chief Service Officer and Chief Deputy Director on projects and issues that are often highly sensitive. Regular contact with leadership team is also necessary. Incumbent will also work with external stakeholders including representatives from the news media. Issues will often be highly sensitive.
E. Actions and Consequences
The consequences of error in this position can lead to actions by legislators, the public and the media that could be based on misleading or incorrect information. These actions could affect critical operations of the department and the department’s management. Errors can also result in misperceptions of the department’s plans and goals, and give members of the affected community incorrect information upon which they base their actions and decisions. These consequences can be significant.
F. Functional Requirements
The incumbent will usually work normal hours in an office setting, although work during evening hours and weekends may be required on occasion.
H. Other Information
Excellent, written, oral and interpersonal communications skills are essential, as is an understanding of the Department’s affirmative action, sexual harassment and other employee rights policies. The incumbent must have strong supervisory and leadership skills, and a demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment.

This position's location is not limited to Sacramento, California. California Volunteers' office is located in Sacramento. However, California Volunteers will accommodate applicants who wish to work remotely temporarily as a result of COVID-19, or permanently. Therefore, California Volunteers will consider applicants throughout the state who are interested in this position.
