Operations/Organizing Manager


WHO WE ARE:

Yarrow Intergenerational Society for Justice is a small non-profit organization where we envision a thriving, equitable, and intergenerational community in Chinatown. We provide accessible and culturally relevant services to low-income seniors living in Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside, while empowering youth and seniors to work together to create collective change to improve the community.

 

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Operations/Organizing Manager oversees and ensures the effective and strategic operations of Yarrow’s programs. They are one of two senior staff at Yarrow, along with the Community/Campaign Manager. They work closely with the Community/Campaign Manager and Board of Directors to ensure the organization is meeting its long-term vision to develop youth and senior leadership and build community power in Chinatown.

The Operations/Organizing Manager brings both administrative skills and community organizing skills to their role. They supervise staff who deliver Yarrow’s programs, including the Sticky Rice Collective, Chinese Seniors Hub, Medical Accompaniment, and Seniors Casework, mentoring them in integrating political education and collective action into program activities in ways that are culturally relevant and intergenerational. They support the Community/Campaign Manager in developing a strategy for the Language Access to Healthcare Campaign. Additionally, they are responsible for grant writing and administrative processes, such as budgeting and payroll.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration and Operations

Ensure that Yarrow operates effectively and strategically, in collaboration with the Community/Campaign Manager and the Board:

  • Fulfill legal obligations as a non-profit society and an employer
  • Develop and implement strategic and financial plans
  • Develop and manage the annual budget
  • Align programs with organizational priorities and values and evaluate effectiveness
  • Manage grant writing and fundraising

Establish and manage administrative processes, including payroll, bookkeeping, and office upkeep

Supervision and Management

Supervise and support program staff to:

  • Manage workloads and prioritize staff well-being
  • Ensure staff fulfill their responsibilities and adhere to Yarrow’s values and policies

Promote and model healthy work practices and team dynamics

Community Organizing

Mentor program staff to:

  • Develop community organizing skills
  • Incorporate political education and collective action into programs in ways that are culturally relevant and intergenerational

Support the Community/Campaign Manager in developing and implementing the strategy for a Language Access to Healthcare Campaign

Board Relations

Manage and advise the Board, in collaboration with the Community/Campaign Manager:

  • Attend Board meetings and provide regular program and financial reports
  • Bring strategic and financial issues to the Board for direction, acting as the liaison between program staff and Board
  • Assist with planning the AGM

Support the Board in operating as a collective and increasing participation from members

Partnerships

Build and sustain relationships with key partners and funders

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Language

  • Written and oral fluency in English; oral fluency in Cantonese and/or Mandarin are assets

Program Operations

  • Experience in program development and strategic planning within a non-profit organization
  • Experience with budget development, including resource planning and management skills
  • Experience with project planning, delegation, execution, and evaluation
  • Ability to tolerate uncertainty and ambiguity as you will be joining a small staff team in a new non-profit organization
  • Commitment to maintaining professional standards and confidentiality
  • Strong decision-making, time-management, and organizational abilities
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and facilitation skills

Team-Building and Supervision

  • Ability to collaborate, support, and supervise program staff members, with active listening and empathy
  • Ability to facilitate a welcoming and safe work/community environment
  • Ability to establish personal and professional boundaries and self-care
  • Experience working in collaboration with senior staff and board members

Community Organizing and Culture

  • Experience with community organizing, union organizing, or political education
  • Experience working with Chinese immigrant seniors
  • Experience working with youth, especially youth of colour, immigrant youth, or Chinese Canadian youth
  • Knowledge of systemic oppression and its impacts on the people we serve
  • Commitment to promoting a culturally safe, anti-oppressive, and low–barrier learning environment
  • Culturally competent, active and trusted member of the Chinese community
  • Ability to create a safe and welcoming environment for clients to discuss mental health and women’s health issues
