ORGANIZATION

Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to healing the psychological and psychosocial impacts of trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses and forced displacement resulting from war, torture, gender-based, criminal and other interpersonal violence; and persecution related to identity and beliefs. At our Mosaic Healing Center in Berkeley, California, we: (a) Provide globally culturally and contextually responsive, trauma-informed and linguistically accessible psychological and psychosocial care for asylum seekers and refugees from around the world, (b) Expand multidisciplinary clinical capacity to serve highly diverse international populations through an in-depth yearlong clinical training program, (c) Conduct community outreach, support and training to address the needs of forcibly displaced immigrants and newcomers, and (d) Advocate for policies to prevent trauma and re-traumatization among international survivors of human rights abuses and forced displacement.

POSITION OVERVIEW

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic nonprofit organization working at the juncture of global mental health and human rights. As a member of the Leadership Team, the primary responsibility of the Director of Client Care will be to lead and oversee PTR’s provision of direct services in the San Francisco Bay Area and participate in leading the organization. Collaborating closely with the Leadership Team and reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Client Care will serve as PTR’s clinical leader regarding client care programming and service delivery in the local context. This position will manage and supervise direct service staff who provide psychological, psychosocial and psychiatric care, as well as training and outreach activities, overseeing the quality of globally trauma-informed and culturally responsive services provided for international survivors of human rights abuses who have fled violence and persecution in their countries of origin, and are seeking greater safety in California.

PTR’s philosophy of healing from interpersonal trauma is relationally and humanistically oriented and grounded in relationship- and attachment-based approaches to care. From a globally sensitive and flexible perspective which focuses on client priorities, PTR offers free open-ended care which values depth, meaning and relationship. We see asylum seekers and refugees who come from over 45 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia & the Middle East.

Reports to: Executive Director

Direct Reports: Clinical Manager, Lead Supervising Psychologist, Training Manager, Clinical Supervisors, Consulting Psychiatrist, other staff as assigned.

Due to public health & safety considerations during the Covid-19 pandemic, PTR has been operating remotely since the spring of 2020. The Director of Client Care will work remotely until PTR returns to in-person work, at which time they would need to be located in the San Francisco Bay Area. PTR will consider offering a relocation package.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The roles and responsibilities of the Director of Client Care will include the following and other duties as assigned:

Client Care Program Leadership (40%)

● Lead the ongoing development, implementation and evaluation of Bay Area client care in alignment with PTR’s mission and strategic plan. Remain responsive to client needs and primary programmatic goals, and attentive to annual work plans and grant requirements.

● In collaboration with the Leadership Team, managers and direct service staff, help foster an integrated approach to client care addressing the needs of forcibly displaced international populations through a globally trauma-informed and culturally responsive relational and humanistic lens.

● Oversee the development and maintenance of structures, policies and procedures regarding the provision of client care in the local context. Support collaboration and coordination within and across programs and teams, helping maintain effective communication and information flow.

● Maintain a comprehensive understanding of PTR’s grants and funding requirements and contribute to grant writing as necessary. Work closely with the Program Director to ensure implementation of direct services meets evolving grant requirements. Regularly communicate grant-related information to direct service staff.

● Work with the Leadership Team, managers and direct service staff to establish goals, monitor and evaluate outcomes and address challenges in meeting objectives.

● Foster relationships which support the organization’s mission and priorities and represent PTR externally to funders and other partners.

Direct Services Supervision & Management (50%)

● Maintain oversight of direct client care programming in the Bay Area, including psychological, psychosocial and psychiatric services, clinical training and community outreach activities.

● Guide, mentor and provide management, clinical supervision, consultation and professional development support for direct service staff and consultants.

● Foster a strong and cohesive client care team, facilitating communication and coordinating workflow, resources and priorities to meet programmatic goals and objectives.

● Manage and oversee client caseloads, and ensure providers follow ethical, legal and regulatory requirements set forth by PTR policies and procedures and federal and state laws, including the California Board of Psychology and Board of Behavioral Sciences.

● Work closely with the Data & Reporting team to oversee and develop systems for effective data entry and client care documentation in Salesforce electronic client record keeping system.

● In collaboration with the Leadership Team and managers, recruit direct service staff with emphasis on global diversity and inclusion. Conduct new direct service staff orientation, training and mentorship.

● In collaboration with the Leadership Team, develop policies and procedures to support staff wellbeing and professional development, protect employee health and safety, mitigate risk of secondary trauma and burnout, and support a growing and diverse workforce.

● Participate in organization-wide activities and meetings and perform other duties as assigned.

Client Care (10%)

● Provide globally culturally and contextually responsive, trauma-informed and linguistically accessible psychological and psychosocial care for 2-4 clients at a time.

● Complete client care documentation in accordance with PTR policies and grant requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education & Experience

● Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D or Ph.D), Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work (MSW) or Counseling Psychology (MFT)

● Licensed in the state of California, or able to obtain CA licensure by 2021 if licensed in another state

● 6+ years of experience providing trauma-informed care for individuals, families & groups

● 5+ years of experience providing psychological & psychosocial care for diverse & underserved populations with limited access to community resources

● 4+ years in a leadership position within a non-profit and/or community mental health setting

● 4+ years of experience in team management and/or group leadership

● 4+ years of experience providing clinical supervision

● Experience & interest in providing relationship- and attachment-based & relationally oriented psychotherapy & clinical supervision

● Experience developing service delivery systems and protocols & procedures for client care

● Experience & interest in fostering diverse, equitable and inclusive work & team environments

Preferred Experience & Skills

● Experience working cross-culturally with diverse international populations

● Fluency in one or more languages in addition to English

● Experience working clinically in different languages and/or with in-person interpreters

● Experience working with refugees and/or asylum seekers

● International work, study and/or living experience

● Experience leading groups & familiarity with group dynamics

● Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
